Tasty Morsels

On a recent trip to Houston for two speaking engagements, I was reading a new book by Dr. Mary Ann Block on the topic of ADD/ADHD. I too am continually adding to my knowledge of this subject. Through this study I more fully understood a very basic concept about blood sugar levels affect on the brain.

The brain needs a steady supply of glucose. It cannot store glucose and therefore, 40% of the blood is circulated to the brain regularly to keep it fed constantly. Without a steady supply of glucose, the brain will go into a coma. This is true for all humans, adults as well as children.

We send our kids off to school with pop tarts and a glass of chocolate milk, their blood sugars soaring. Shortly after arriving at school, while sitting at their desks their blood sugar suddenly drops. When the child's brain receives the message that the food it needs to remain conscious has suddenly disappeared, the body will respond to keep the child out of a coma by activating the fight or flight mechanism.

Click here to ask Nancy. What does this mean? The child's adrenals kick in and glucose is rushed to the blood stream. This system has saved many lives, given people supernatural strength, and supplied quick energy to move quickly when in danger. But when this fight or flight energy hits a child while he is sitting in a classroom, will he be able to remain still? No because his body is saying move or die. So he moves, talks, gets out of his desk, or acts out.

What is a parent to do - put the child on Ritalin? No. By feeding a child in a manner to help the blood sugar levels remain steady, the fight or flight response is not triggered by a sudden drop. That is what the smoothie recipe is doing for these children.

If you would like to hear what other parents are saying about their child's response to this smoothie, simply e-mail me and I'll send you copies of satisfied parents' comments.
